How we build

The four things that separate marine joinery from furniture

Timber moves, so we let it

Panels float in their frames and solid tops are fixed at one end only. A piece screwed flat across the grain will split in its second winter, and it always splits somewhere visible.

We template on the boat

Drawings are a starting point. Somebody comes aboard with a sheet of ply and cuts the actual shape, because hulls are not symmetrical and forty-year-old ones are less symmetrical still.

Fastenings you can undo

Bronze and A4 stainless, bedded rather than bonded. Everything we fit can be taken out again by the next person, which is not true of most of what we take out.

The maker does the fitting

The person who cut the joints comes to the boat to hang it. It costs more in travel and saves the week that gets lost when a fitter meets a piece for the first time.
